If your walking pace could talk, what would it say? Maybe something like: “Let’s pick it up a little!”

According to new research, adding just 14 more steps per minute to your regular walking pace could boost your physical function by 10%, especially for older adults who may feel a bit more tired or slow these days.

Sounds too simple? That’s the beauty of it!

Why walking matters more than we think

Whether you're a golden-aged go-getter or just trying to stay limber for daily life, walking is one of the easiest ways to build strength and keep moving with confidence. Studies show it helps with:

  • Staying independent longer

  • Reducing the risk of chronic illness like heart disease and type 2 diabetes

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Strengthening muscles and bones

Walk like a pro — here’s how:

  1. Use a metronome app (or set a beat with music) to find your walking rhythm.

  2. Increase your cadence slowly — 5 to 10 extra steps per minute at a time.

  3. Stand tall and swing those arms! Walking is a full-body workout, not just a leg game.

  4. Try nose breathing — inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. This can help balance your blood pressure and calm your mind.

Every step counts

Even a 5-minute walk a day helps. The goal isn’t to power-walk your way into a marathon (unless you want to). It’s about staying active, feeling good, and aging with energy.

So lace up your shoes, turn on your favorite tune, and walk your way to wellness. Your body will thank you with every step.
